Windy Boy 5000A/6000A Grid Connection

In
contrast to large systems, small wind turbines are used
mainly as battery chargers for stand-alone power
supplies, heating mills for the support of heating
systems and wind pumps for water supply systems.
In recent years small grid-connected wind turbines which
feed energy into existing public grids or stand-alone
grids have emerged. Indirect feeding guarantees maximum
flexibility: the energy generated can either be consumed
or supplied as excess energy to the public grid without
the need for interim storage in a battery. The resulting
savings are significant since there is no longer any
need for expensive high-maintenance batteries.
The
conversion of direct current into alternating current in
small wind turbine systems is now easier than ever
before. The Windy Boy inverters make it possible to
operate small, grid-connected wind turbines with
permanent magnet generators, and with 3-phase rectifiers
downstream. The Windy Boy converts the rectified DC
current from a wind generator, which varies with speed,
into grid-compliant alternating current (AC). In order
to protect the inverter from excessive input voltage the
system should be equipped with overvoltage protection,
available from many generator manufacturers.
It is
only possible to achieve high yields from a wind turbine
if the inverter is precisely synchronized with the
output characteristics of the wind generator being used.
Furthermore, and in contrast to photovoltaic
applications, constant and sudden load changes have to
be taken into account. The Windy Boy inverter has a
special operational mode for wind generators and
adjustments can be made for different wind strengths of
various wind turbine locations.
The system can be used almost anywhere in the world with
minimum installation costs and simplified authorization
procedures thanks to its transformer-based concept, the
grid guard automatic disconnection unit and the
automatic 50 Hz / 60 Hz recognition.
The ensured operation of the system in extreme climatic
conditions is of particular importance in the wind
sector. The Windy Boy is suitable for indoor and outdoor
installation, including directly on a mast thanks to its
particularly robust housing and waterproof plug
connector.
In addition to a display, there are various options for
diagnostics, data visualization, data storage and remote
maintenance of your wind turbine system by means of
standard interfaces (RS232 and RS485), SMA Powerline or
wireless data transmission. Compatibility with all SMA
communication products offers you a wide range of
applications, including system monitoring over the
internet.
The Windy Boy 5000A/6000A enables your wind turbine
system to achieve very high yields with low investment
costs.
The new
active cooling concept, OptiCool, ensures secure system
operation even in high ambient temperatures and provides
optimum protection for the electronics within the
housing with a protection rating of IP65.
This
makes the Windy Boy 5000A/6000A ideal for applications
both indoors and outdoors.

Sunny Island 5048U
Together with the battery unit, the
stand-alone inverter Sunny Island creates a standard AC
voltage grid into which all components, from electrical
appliances to electricity generators, can be integrated.
With this AC coupling and the Sunny Island as its system
manager, SMA has developed the technological solution
for energy supply in remote areas which are far away
from the mains grid, or for emergency power supply in
unstable grids.
For the first time, PV systems,
wind turbines, diesel generators, hydroelectric or
combined heat and power plants can now be coupled on the
AC side along with 230V loads, eliminating the
need for expensive DC cabling and providing maximum
flexibility. This makes it possible to adapt a
stand-alone grid of this kind to increasing demands,
quickly and without technical complexity. With SMA‘s
technology it is possible to provide electricity to a
large proportion of the 1.6 billion people who do not
have access to it today.
The Sunny Island guarantees
standalone grids with perfect sinusoidal voltage, high
overload capability, and excellent reliability. All
required system components for the construction of a
stand-alone power system are available as a complete
package, optimally aligned with each other to comply
with SMA’s high technological standards.
The Sunny Island product range is
compatible with all SMA communication products. The
monitoring options range from on-site monitoring, right
through to integration in the online Sunny Portal.
The coupling on the AC side
increases the capacity of the power generators. In cases
of high solar radiation, the available energy of the
Sunny Island and of the Sunny Boy are combined,
increasing the total output of your grid. Stand-alone
grids with the Sunny Island can be expanded from a
singlephase supply to a 3-phase grid with several Sunny
Islands. This can be done step by step, according to the
increasing energy demand.
SMA’s next generation of Sunny
Island inverters combines the most advanced technology
used in our Sunny Boys with an outstanding feature set
for off-grid PV applications.
The new Sunny Island 5048U has incredible surge
capabilities and excellent AC output characteristics.
Each unit provides a very clean and stable 120 VAC
output. Multiple units can be used together for
single-phase, split-phase or three-phase applications.
The Sunny Island also features the unique ability to
facilitate AC coupling of all power generation sources.
This makes for efficient use of available AC power and
greatly simplifies system expansion. The Sunny Island
5048U also helps to optimize the overall life of the
batteries through its advanced battery management
system.
The Sunny Island can also be utilized as a back-up
system in grid-tied applications. Its seamless transfer
allows existing Sunny Boy inverters to be utilized
during daytime grid outages. The Sunny Island 5048U is
an extremely robust and sophisticated unit providing
both off-grid and back-up users with the highest quality
available in the industry today.
Features:
 | Certified to the new UL 1741 /
UL 1998 standards. |
 | 5-year warranty. |
 | Suitable for systems from 3 kW
to 26 kW. |
 | AC coupling of all energy
sources. |
 | DC coupling with optional
equipment. |

OutBack
Inverter/Charger

The Outback Inverter/Charger is the next generation
in advanced power management. Each is a DC to AC
sinewave inverter, battery charger and AC transfer
switch housed within a tough die-cast aluminum chassis.
Just like the local utility grid, the inverter
produces true sinewave AC electricity for your
stand-alone or backup power needs. Computers, TVs and
pumps are just some of the examples of modern
electronics that last longer and run better when powered
with true sinewave electricity from an OutBack inverter.
Starting up your air conditioning, washing machine or
well pump is worry-free because of our high surge power
capability.
Batteries and generators are the costly consumables
when using inverters to generate electricity. The
integrated smart battery charger uses multiple stages to
perform quick recharging while prolonging battery life,
saving your batteries and generator from unnecessary
wear. Automatic switching between AC power sources is
seamless due to an AC transfer switch that reacts in
less than 16 milliseconds.
Unique networked communication is built into all
OutBack products providing complete integration.
Expanding your system with your growing power needs is
as simple as adding additional inverters with modular
architecture. Further flexibility is provided with the
ability to be connected at any time in either parallel,
series or three-phase power configurations. Industry
leading OutBack reliability is achieved through
simplified design and rugged construction.
